Dr. Vangelos has been a primary care sports medicine physician with Horizon Orthopedic since 1989. His practice is musculoskeletal based and includes the treatment of non-surgical orthopedic and medical conditions of athletes and active people of various ages. In addition to being a Team Physician with the Cleveland Indians since 1991, Dr. Vangelos is a consulting physician to many area high schools including the Strongsville and Lakewood School Systems, as well as the U.S. Triathlon and the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Dr. Vangelos serves on the past president’s advisory committee for the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. He was the past medical director for the annual National City Triathlon from 1997 to 2000 and the 1996 International Triathlon Championships.
Among his specialty interests are sports medicine and motion analysis in addition to medical and performance aspects of exercise. Dr. Vangelos’ clinical research includes the areas of running and musculoskeletal injuries, ankle sprains, and youth participation in sports. He also has a strong interest in nonoperative bracing protocols for spondylolysis in young athletes. His most recent clinical publication is an article which appeared in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine entitled, “The Effect of the Menstrual Cycle on the Laxity of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in Adolescent Female Athletes.” Dr. Vangelos has written a chapter on Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Soccer published in 2005 in the book, Principles of Manual Sports Medicine.
Dr. Vangelos established a primary care sports medicine fellowship in 1993 which is offered through South Pointe Hospital, a member hospital of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. He serves as director of this 12 month advanced training program for physicians. Additionally he is a clinical instructor for residents at South Pointe Hospital and St. John West Shore Hospital and an Associate Clinical Instructor for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
